Torremolinos local fiestas

Torremolinos might not be the typical Costa del Sol town that many have pictured in their minds but it is still rich in culture. Starting with the Flamenco dance that is practised extensively in this part of the costa del Sol and ending with the countless fiestas and celebrations that are held in Torremolinos as well as its neighboring towns and cities – Torremolinos is definitely a great place to get to know some of the Spanish culture and traditions.Torremolinos Fiestas on the Costa del Sol, Spain

For those who wish to enjoy Torremolinos in its purest essence, there is the opportunity to participate in the local customs and festivals of the townspeople, throughout the year.

Those interested in traditional dancing will not only find several Flamenco bars but also places in which championships and contests are held. Probably the most popular and famous one is the Championship Ballroom Dance Contest – an international competition where professional dancers meet to elect the new champion(s). Broadcasted even on TV and lasting over several days, it is one of the top events in the area!

Other very popular events include the traditional “verdiales” festival where dancing is also the main subject. As Spain is a very religious country, the Holy Week belongs to the most important celebrations during the year. With processions taking place not only in Torremolinos but also nearly every other town, it is something that should not be missed. Shops are usually closed during the time as everyone is out on the streets, following the splendid parades with the large statues that are being carried to the churches.Torremolinos Holy Week on the Costa del Sol, Spain

The “La Virgen del Carmen” is a festivity on the 16th of July. On this day all fishermen pay their tribute to the patroness that gave the festival its name. It is celebrated in La Carihuela – the old and partly still intact fishing district of Torremolinos. The image of the virgin is being placed on one of the several fishing boats that will later set sail in a nautical procession.

Only about three weeks earlier, in the end of June there is the famous “San Juan” fiesta. In Torremolinos and also in Benalmadena and other nearby towns, San Juan is celebrated on the beach, with fireworks and – of course – drinks and food. Semana Santa or 'Holy Week'.

As you probably have already guessed, there are numerous cultural events held in Torremolinos and its surroundings. Costa del Sol is famous for its celebrations and fiestas and there is hardly any day where there is no festivity taking place somewhere in the region. The local ferias for example last one week and are celebrated in each town separately – on different dates. This also counts for the days of the patron saints, which is a different one in every village or city.

Saint John´s feast is celebrated on the 24th of July, around the summer solstice. It is often held on the beach as it is said to bring good luck when dipping your feet in the water just after midnight.

Sometimes you even see people go for a swim – with or without their clothes on! The celebrations come along with fireworks, drinks and food as well as music. Traditionally Spaniards do not go to the beach until this day.

Torremolinos stages numerous summer Fairs and processions that are held throughout the year, all of which are worth visiting.
